Review: Second Hand Jane by Michelle Vernal

Author: Michelle Vernal
Genre: Women's Fiction, Romance
Page Length: 302 Pages
Publication Date: September 6th, 2015
Publishers: Michelle Vernal Publishing Limited

With her love of all things vintage, Jessica Jane BarĂ© is known as Second-hand Jane to her friends. Life would be sweet if it weren’t for her meddling mother, Marian who views Jess’s life as a newspaper columnist in Dublin as nothing more than a stop-gap until she meets Mr Right. When Jess meets the delectable Nick, he ticks all of Marian’s boxes.

In the meantime, Jess’s latest second-hand collectible–a children’s book—gives her an idea and deciding to track down the girl whose name is scribbled inside the cover of that book, she uncovers more than she expected. “Amy was in the wrong place at the wrong time.” The girl’s taciturn brother, Owen informs her. Intrigued Jess travels to the family pig farm in County Down. With a little help from a rather cute runt of the litter she names Wilbur, Jess is about to help put the past to rest and learn that appearances can be deceptive.

Then Marian announces she is coming to Dublin to sort her daughter’s increasingly tangled love life out and Jess’s chance of a happy ending like those in the story books she collects looks about as likely as Wilbur flying.

Vintage, Irish villages, Journalist, writer... Oh there! I had to read this book. Glad to find this lovely book. Second Hand Jane by Michelle Vernal is one of those make-you-feel-good stories and a MUST READ IF YOU LOVE IRELAND. Somehow, it also made me watch the movie 'Leap Year' again.

Jessica Jane Bare aka Second Hand Jane (because she LOVES vintage items and her apartment is filled with them) is a New Zealander living in Dublin, Ireland, she works as a Columnist in the local newspaper. She hasn't met Mr. Right yet and her mother reminds it always. Meanwhile, she decides to find the owner of a storybook she collected and to tell her story to the world. Will she find her? Will that journey change her life? Will she find her Mr. Right?...

I liked Jesse and her story, interesting one! She is a quirky, fun and lovely character, it will be hard not to like Jesse. She collects anything vintage; from teacups to charming dresses. She is fascinated by a name inscribed in one of the second-hand storybooks and decides to find the owner, out of curiosity. But it brings her a heartbreaking story. The plot line is pretty unique. It made me think about the war-related news I hear every day and sympathize for their family. That thought had never passed my mind afore. Besides that, it also tells Jesse's cute romantic story. The ending was predictable (but, I wanted that happy ending). Totally enjoyable read.

Second Hand Jane is an absorbing book. It has elements of friendship, family, romance, humor, and sadness. It will make you cry, smile and chuckle the next moment. Interesting characters and beautiful descriptions will take you on a virtual journey through the Irish Villages. Grab a copy and read, you will not be disappointed.

My Rating: 4/5 (I LIKED IT)
